Volcanic Landforms: From Gentle Giants to Steep Peaks
Fissures create some of the most spectacular landscapes on Earth when tectonic plates pull apart. Instead of exploding from a single vent, lava oozes out through long cracks in the ground. This basaltic lava flows steadily across huge areas, cooling slowly to form those famous hexagonal columns you see at the Giant's Causeway.
Basic or shield volcanoes look nothing like the classic volcano shape you might imagine. These massive structures have incredibly gentle slopes because the runny basaltic lava flows for miles before cooling. Think of Mauna Loa in Hawaii - it's absolutely enormous but you could practically walk up its sides without breaking a sweat.
Acid or dome volcanoes are the complete opposite - steep, dangerous-looking peaks that mean business. The viscous lava is so thick it barely flows before solidifying, creating those dramatic steep convex slopes. When lava gets stuck in the vent and hardens, it forms a spine that gets pushed up like a giant stone needle during the next eruption.

More Volcanic Shapes: Cones, Composites, and Calderas
Ash and cinder cones are the textbook volcano shape - perfectly symmetrical with those classic slightly concave sides. They're built entirely from ash and cinder fragments that pile up layer by layer. Paricutin in Mexico is a brilliant example, and it actually formed in a farmer's field over just a few years!
Composite cones are the drama queens of the volcano world, formed by alternating gentle and violent eruptions. First comes acidic lava, then explosive ash eruptions, building up steep-sided monsters like Mt Etna. These often develop parasitic cones - smaller vents that branch off from the main event.
Calderas form after absolutely massive explosions that literally blow the top off the volcano. When the magma chamber empties out in one colossal eruption, the crater walls collapse inwards, creating enormous circular depressions. These often fill with water to become lakes, or lagoons if they're near the sea.
