Cell Transport Mechanisms
Your cell membrane acts like a selective bouncer at a club - it only lets certain molecules through. This selective permeability is crucial because cells need to control what enters and exits to survive.
There are three main ways substances move across cell membranes. Diffusion is the simplest - molecules naturally spread from crowded areas to less crowded ones, like how perfume spreads across a room. Osmosis specifically deals with water movement, following the same high-to-low concentration pattern.
Active transport is different because it works against the natural flow, moving substances from low to high concentration areas. Think of it like cycling uphill - it needs energy to happen.
💡 Remember: Passive processes (diffusion and osmosis) are like rolling downhill - no energy needed. Active transport is like cycling uphill - energy required!

Osmosis in Different Cell Types
When you put cells in different water concentrations, dramatic things happen! In animal cells, too much water causes them to swell and burst because they lack protective walls. Too little water makes them shrivel up like raisins.
Plant cells are much tougher thanks to their rigid cell walls. When water floods in, the cell becomes turgid (firm and swollen), which keeps plants standing upright. This is why well-watered plants look perky!
When plant cells lose water, they become plasmolysed - the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall like a deflated balloon. This is why plants wilt when they're thirsty.
💡 Quick tip: High water concentration (HWC) = cells gain water. Low water concentration (LWC) = cells lose water. Simple!
