Transcription & Translation

Your cells are constantly turning DNA instructions into proteins through two crucial processes. Think of transcription as photocopying a recipe from a cookbook, whilst translation is actually following that recipe to cook something brilliant.

Transcription happens first in your cell's nucleus. The enzyme helicase unzips a specific gene sequence, exposing one DNA strand as a template. RNA polymerase then reads this template and builds a complementary mRNA molecule using free RNA nucleotides floating around the nucleus.

Here's the clever bit - only 12 DNA bases get exposed at once, keeping the process controlled. Once RNA polymerase hits a terminator sequence, it detaches, and ligase seals the DNA back up like nothing happened.

In eukaryotic cells (like yours), the newly formed pre-mRNA needs editing. Unwanted sections called introns get spliced out, leaving only the useful exons connected together. This creates the final mRNA that exits through nuclear pores, ready for the next stage.

Quick Tip: Remember that prokaryotes skip the splicing step entirely - they don't produce pre-mRNA at all!

Translation occurs at ribosomes in your cytoplasm. A ribosome attaches to one end of the mRNA, and tRNA molecules with complementary anticodons bring specific amino acids to match each codon. Peptide bonds form between amino acids as the ribosome shuffles along the mRNA.

This process is remarkably efficient - up to 15 amino acids can be added each second, and about 50 ribosomes can work on one mRNA simultaneously. Everything stops when the ribosome reaches a stop codon, releasing the completed protein.
