The Heart's Structure and Function

Think of your heart as having two separate pumps working side by side, each with a specific job. The right side handles the "dirty work" - it pumps de-oxygenated blood (blood that's used up its oxygen) to your lungs through the pulmonary artery. Meanwhile, the left side does the heavy lifting by pumping fresh oxygenated blood around your entire body through the aorta.

The heart has four chambers that work like a well-coordinated team. The atrium (plural: atria) are the receiving chambers - the right atrium gets blood returning from your body via the vena cava, whilst the left atrium receives freshly oxygenated blood from your lungs through the pulmonary vein.

The ventricles are the powerhouse chambers that do all the pumping. The right ventricle pushes blood to your lungs, and the left ventricle (the strongest chamber) pumps blood to every corner of your body. The septum acts like a wall, keeping the two sides completely separate so oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood never mix.

Your circulatory system relies on valves - think of them as one-way doors that prevent blood from flowing backwards. Arteries are the motorways carrying blood away from your heart, whilst veins are the return routes bringing blood back home.
