How Neurones Connect Through Synapses
Your nervous system works like an incredibly fast messaging network, and synapses are the crucial connection points between neurones. Think of them as tiny gaps where one nerve cell "talks" to the next one.
Here's the brilliant bit: when an electrical signal reaches the end of a neurone, it can't just jump across the gap. Instead, the neurone releases special chemicals that drift across this microscopic space. These chemicals then trigger a brand new electrical signal in the next neurone, keeping your message moving.
Reflexes are your body's emergency response system - they're automatic reactions that happen without you having to think about them. When bright light hits your eyes, your pupils shrink instantly to protect your retina. If you touch something scorching hot, your hand jerks back before your brain even processes "ouch!" These lightning-quick responses are called reflex arcs.

The Reflex Arc Journey Through Your CNS
Your reflex arc takes a specific route through your central nervous system (CNS) - either through your spinal cord or the unconscious parts of your brain. This pathway is what makes reflexes so much quicker than your normal responses.
The journey starts when receptors detect a stimulus and fire impulses along sensory neurones towards the CNS. At the first synapse, chemicals are released that pass the message to a relay neurone. This process repeats at the next synapse, where the relay neurone passes the signal to a motor neurone.
Finally, the motor neurone carries the impulses to an effector (usually a muscle), which contracts and creates movement. The whole process happens in milliseconds because there's no time wasted on conscious decision-making.
What makes this system so effective is that your spinal cord can handle the entire response without bothering your brain. By the time you consciously realise what's happened, your body has already protected itself.
Remember: The reflex arc pathway is sensory neurone → relay neurone → motor neurone → effector. This sequence is essential exam knowledge!
