Ever wondered how your body knows exactly how to build itself? It's all down to DNA's brilliant double helix structure - imagine a twisted ladder where each rung holds vital genetic information.

The two strands of this molecular ladder are held together by weak hydrogen bonds between special chemicals called bases. These bases are quite picky about their partners - adenine always pairs with thymine, and cytosine always pairs with guanine. This reliable pairing system is called complementary base pairing, and it's absolutely essential for DNA to work properly.

Each strand is built from smaller units called nucleotides, which are like building blocks made of three parts: a phosphate group, a deoxyribose sugar, and a base. The sugar has five carbon atoms numbered 1-5, which helps scientists identify different parts of the molecule.

Here's where it gets clever - the sugar-phosphate backbone forms when the sugar from one nucleotide bonds strongly with the phosphate from the nucleotide below it. The two strands run in opposite directions (antiparallel), with one going 5' to 3' and the other 3' to 5'. This base sequence creates the genetic code that determines everything from your eye colour to how your proteins are made: base sequence → amino acids → proteins.
