Understanding Reaction Times - Biology GCSE Practical 7

Setting Up the Reaction Time Test
You'll need a partner for this experiment - one person tests whilst the other measures. Person 1 sits upright on a stool with their dominant arm resting on the table, hand hanging over the edge.
Person 2 holds a ruler vertically so the 0cm mark sits between Person 1's thumb and first finger. When Person 2 drops the ruler at a random moment, Person 1 must catch it as quickly as possible.
The key measurement is where the ruler sits level with the top of Person 1's thumb after catching it. Repeat this several times to calculate a mean reaction time, then swap roles to compare results between different people.
Top Tip: Make sure the person catching doesn't anticipate the drop - it needs to be completely random for accurate results!

Variables and Variations
Your independent variable is the person being tested, whilst the dependent variable is their reaction time measurement. Keep everything else constant - same finger distance, same thumb measurement point, and identical room conditions.
Want to explore further? Try testing how practice affects reaction time by repeating the test many times with the same person. You could also compare dominant versus non-dominant hands to see which reacts faster.
For a real challenge, investigate how substances like caffeine might change reaction times. Have someone drink a measured amount 30 minutes before testing, then compare their results to their normal reaction time.
Remember: The more variables you control, the more reliable your results will be!

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
