The Plasma Membrane Structure
Think of your cell membrane as a busy nightclub bouncer - it decides who gets in and who stays out! The membrane is built from phospholipids, which are like tiny molecules with a water-loving head and two water-hating tails.
These phospholipids naturally arrange themselves into a double layer (called a bilayer) because water surrounds both sides of the cell. The hydrophilic heads face outward toward the water, whilst the hydrophobic tails hide inward, away from water - it's like they're huddling together for protection.
The membrane also contains different types of proteins that do specific jobs. Extrinsic proteins sit on the surface and help with mechanical support, act as cell receptors for hormones, and help cells recognise each other. Intrinsic proteins span right across the membrane like tunnels, allowing large molecules like glucose and amino acids to pass through.
Key Point: The phospholipid bilayer is flexible, letting your cells shrink and swell without bursting, whilst allowing small, non-polar molecules (like vitamins) to slip through easily.
This whole structure is called the fluid mosaic model because the proteins and phospholipids can move around like pieces floating in a liquid, creating an ever-changing mosaic pattern. This flexibility is what keeps your cells alive and functioning properly!
