The Calvin Cycle: Making Sugar Without Direct Sunlight

Think of the Calvin cycle as a molecular recycling plant that turns CO₂ into the sugars you need for energy. It happens in the stroma $the fluid-filled space inside chloroplasts$ and doesn't directly need light – but it does need the products from the light-dependent reactions.

The cycle starts when carbon dioxide gets grabbed by a 5-carbon molecule called ribulose bisphosphate. The enzyme rubisco catalyses this crucial step, called carbon fixation. This creates an unstable 6-carbon compound that immediately splits into two molecules of glycerate-3-phosphate (G3P).

Here's where it gets interesting: G3P gets reduced using NADPH and ATP from the light-dependent reactions. This creates triose phosphate (TP), which is the actual useful product. One TP molecule heads off to make glucose and other essential compounds like amino acids and lipids.

The remaining five TP molecules get recycled back into ribulose bisphosphate using more ATP. This regeneration step is vital – without it, the whole cycle would grind to a halt and no more sugar could be made.
