Photosynthesis uses energy to change carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen
Takes place in chloroplasts - they contain pigments like chlorophyll that absorb light. Energy is transferred to the chloroplasts from the environment by light.

carbon dioxide + water ➡️light➡️ glucose + oxygen

6 CO2 + 6 H20 ➡️light ➡️ C6H12O6 + 6 O2

Photosynthesis requires energy to drive the chemical reaction. 
Photosynthesis is an endothermic reaction (energy is transferred from the environment in the process) This means it cannot occur without energy/light

Explain why photosynthesis is an endothermic reaction

Limiting factor = when in shortage, slows down the rate of a reaction. 
Light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature are limiting factors of photosynthesis.

Recall the limiting factors of photosynthesis

The rate of photosynthesis will increase as temperature increases until the optimum temperature is reached. 
The rate will then decrease as the temperature increases further. 
This is because the enzymes involved will become denatured.

Explain how limiting factors affect the rate of photosynthesis, including graphical interpretation (limited to one factor)

The graph shows how carbon dioxide concentration and temperature interact with the effect of light intensity on photosynthesis:

the rate of photosynthesis increases until factors becoming limiting
if carbon dioxide concentration is increased, the rate increases further, and then another factor becomes limiting
the rate can be increased further if the temperature is increased
the rate increases again until another factor becomes limiting

as the distance increases, the light intensity decreases, inversely proportional.
light intensity decreases in proportion to the square of the distance.

Explain and use inverse proportion in the context of photosynthesis

Respiration- transfers energy from glucose enabling plants to convert rest of glucose into other useful substances

Cellulose - Glucose converted into cellulose to make strong plant cell walls 

Amino acids - Glucose combined w nitrate ions (absorbed from soil) to make amino acids -> then into proteins

Stored as oils/fats - Glucose turned into lipids for storing in seeds

Stored as starch - Glucose turned into starch & stored in roots, stems and leaves, ready when photosynthesis not happening

Describe how the glucose produced in photosynthesis is used by plants
