The Digestive System

Your digestive system is basically your body's food processing factory. It breaks down large food molecules into tiny ones that can actually be absorbed into your bloodstream. This happens through a series of organs working together - from your mouth all the way to your anus.

The small intestine is the real MVP here, measuring about 5 metres long with a massive surface area for absorption. It's covered in tiny finger-like projections called villi and even tinier microvilli that increase the surface area even more. Think of it like a really fluffy towel - more surface area means better absorption.

Enzymes are the chemical scissors that do all the cutting work. Proteases break proteins into amino acids, amylase chops starch into sugars, and lipase splits fats into glycerol and fatty acids. These enzymes follow the lock and key theory - each enzyme only fits with its specific substrate, like a key fitting into a lock.

Quick Tip: Remember that bile from your liver doesn't contain enzymes, but it helps break down fats by increasing their surface area and neutralising stomach acid.

The Circulatory System

Your heart is basically a double pump that never takes a break. Humans have a double circulatory system, which means blood passes through your heart twice in each complete circuit - once to pick up oxygen from your lungs, then again to deliver it to your body.

Your heart has four chambers that work like a perfectly timed dance. The atria (top chambers) receive blood, whilst the ventricles (bottom chambers) pump it out. Valves act like one-way doors to prevent blood flowing backwards. Your heart's natural rhythm is controlled by a pacemaker - if this fails, doctors can fit an artificial one.

Blood vessels have different jobs: arteries carry blood away from your heart under high pressure (thick, muscular walls), veins bring it back under low pressure (thin walls with valves), and capillaries are where the actual exchange happens (super thin walls for easy diffusion).

Your blood is made up of plasma (the liquid bit), red blood cells (carry oxygen using haemoglobin), white blood cells (fight infections), and platelets (help blood clot). Red blood cells are specially shaped like biconcave discs to maximise their surface area for carrying oxygen.

Remember: Blood type matching is crucial for transfusions - your immune system will reject the wrong type of blood!
