Monosaccharides: The Building Blocks
Monosaccharides are the simplest carbohydrates - think of them as nature's basic sugar units. All carbohydrates contain three key elements: carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, which combine in specific patterns to create different sugar molecules.
Glucose is probably the most important monosaccharide you'll encounter. It contains 6 carbon atoms, making it a hexose sugar (hex = six). Other common hexose sugars include fructose (found in fruit) and galactose (found in milk).
Not all sugars have six carbons though. Some monosaccharides contain 5 carbon atoms - these are called pentose sugars. Ribose is a key example that you'll see again when studying DNA and RNA.
💡 Quick Tip: Remember that hexose = 6 carbons, pentose = 5 carbons. The prefixes tell you exactly how many carbon atoms are in each sugar!

Why Sugars Love Water
Here's something that might surprise you - all monosaccharides are soluble in water. This isn't random; it's all down to their molecular structure.
Monosaccharides are packed with OH groups (hydroxyl groups). These OH groups are like molecular magnets that can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. This special attraction makes monosaccharides hydrophilic, which literally means "water-loving".
This water solubility is absolutely crucial for life. Because sugars dissolve easily in water, they can travel through your bloodstream and move in and out of cells effortlessly. Without this property, your body couldn't transport glucose to where it's needed for energy.
💡 Remember: Hydrophilic = water-loving. The more OH groups a molecule has, the more likely it is to dissolve in water!
