Understanding Microscopy and Types of Microscopes

Light microscopes are the workhorses of biology labs and the type you'll most likely use in school. They're brilliant for observing cells and basic structures, but they do have limitations compared to their more advanced cousins.

Electron microscopes are the superstars of the microscopy world, offering much higher magnification and resolution than light microscopes. This means they can show you incredible detail of subcellular structures that would be completely invisible under a light microscope. Think of it like comparing a basic camera to a professional one - both take pictures, but one reveals so much more detail!

The timeline matters here: light microscopes came first and paved the way for electron microscopes. This technological leap allowed scientists to dive deeper into understanding how cells actually work at the most fundamental level.

💡 Remember: Resolution is about clarity and detail, whilst magnification is about size - you can make something bigger, but if the resolution is poor, it'll just be a blurry, enlarged image!
