Microscopy is your gateway to exploring the invisible world around... Show more

Understanding magnification and resolution is absolutely crucial for any microscopy work you'll do. Magnification simply tells you how much bigger an image appears compared to real life, calculated as size of image divided by size of object.
Resolution is equally important - it's your microscope's ability to distinguish between two separate points on an image. Think of it like the difference between seeing two dots clearly versus seeing them blur into one blob.
You'll also encounter artefacts, which are basically damage or distortions in your specimen image. These can be frustrating, but recognising them helps you interpret what you're actually seeing versus what's just microscope error.
Quick Tip: Master the unit conversions from kilometres down to nanometres - you'll use these constantly when calculating magnifications and measuring cellular structures.

The story of cell theory shows how scientific understanding builds over time through different researchers' contributions. Robert Hooke kicked things off in 1660 by developing compound microscopes and coining the term "cells" after observing cork tissue.
The theory really took shape in the 1830s when Schleiden declared all plants are made of cells, followed by Schwann extending this to all tissues. Virchow added the crucial piece in 1858 - all cells come from pre-existing cells, not spontaneous generation.
Weismann completed the picture in 1880 by recognising that cells contain hereditary information passed to new cells. This progression shows how each discovery built upon previous work to create our modern understanding.
Remember: These five scientists gave us the foundation of cell theory - cells are the basic units of life, all living things are made of cells, and cells only come from other cells.

Light microscopes are your everyday lab workhorses, offering magnifications up to x2000 with 200nm resolution. They're brilliant for viewing living specimens in colour, making them perfect for observing cellular processes in real-time.
Electron microscopes fall into two categories: Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) examine surface structures with incredible detail up to x500,000 magnification, whilst Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM) reveal internal structures with 0.2nm resolution.
Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopes offer the best of both worlds - they provide 3D images of living specimens, making them invaluable for studying cell relationships and interactions.
Each type has trade-offs: light microscopes are portable and easy to use but limited in magnification; electron microscopes offer incredible detail but require dead specimens and complex preparation.
Key Point: Choose your microscope based on what you need to see - living processes need light microscopes, surface detail needs SEM, and internal structures need TEM.

Staining transforms colourless cells into visible structures you can actually study. Different stains target specific components - iodine reveals starch, Sudan Red shows lipids, and acetic orcein highlights DNA and chromosomes.
Understanding how light travels through your microscope helps you get better images. The condenser lens focuses light through your specimen, whilst the objective lens magnifies the image that reaches your eye through the eyepiece.
Unit conversions become second nature with practice - you'll constantly switch between micrometres for cellular measurements and nanometres for molecular structures. The key is remembering each unit differs by a factor of 1000.
Getting sharp, clear images requires mastering both coarse and fine focus controls. Start with coarse focus to locate your specimen, then use fine focus for crisp detail.
Pro Tip: Always start with the lowest magnification to locate your specimen, then gradually increase magnification while adjusting focus - this prevents you from missing interesting structures.
