Ever wondered how your cells stay organised and don't just become a chaotic mess? That's where plasma membranes come in - they're the clever barriers that separate your cell from the outside world whilst controlling exactly what enters and leaves.

These membranes aren't just simple walls though. They're partially permeable, meaning they're picky about what passes through. Substances move across via diffusion, osmosis, or active transport - processes you'll definitely need to know inside out for your exams.

What makes membranes brilliant is their fluid mosaic structure. Picture a flexible double layer of phospholipids (the 'fluid' bit) with various proteins scattered throughout like tiles in a mosaic (the 'mosaic' bit). This structure gives membranes their flexibility whilst maintaining their selective properties.

Inside your cells, membranes around organelles create separate compartments, making cellular processes way more efficient. They can even form little transport bubbles called vesicles to move substances around - think of them as the cell's internal delivery service!

Quick Tip: Remember that membranes aren't just barriers - they're active participants in chemical reactions, especially in mitochondria and chloroplasts where they contain essential enzymes.
