How pathogens spread?

Communicable Diseases and Pathogens

Your body is constantly under attack from tiny invaders called pathogens - bacteria, viruses, protists, and fungi that can make you seriously ill. These microscopic troublemakers spread through coughing, sneezing, contaminated food and water, or direct contact with infected people.

Viruses like measles, HIV, and tobacco mosaic virus are particularly sneaky because they can't reproduce on their own. Instead, they hijack your cells' machinery, multiply rapidly, then burst out to infect other areas. HIV is especially dangerous as it attacks your immune system directly, eventually leading to AIDS if untreated.

Bacteria such as Salmonella and Gonorrhoea can reproduce themselves and produce harmful toxins that damage your cells and tissues. Meanwhile, fungi cause diseases like rose black spot in plants, and protists like malaria are often spread by vectors (carriers like mosquitoes that don't get the disease themselves).

Remember: Pathogens need specific conditions to spread - good hygiene, isolation of infected people, and vaccination programmes can stop outbreaks before they become epidemics.

How pathogens spread?

Body Defences and Drug Development

Your body has brilliant defence systems working 24/7 to keep pathogens out. Physical barriers like your skin secrete antimicrobial oils, whilst your nose traps invaders with mucus and tiny hairs. Your stomach's hydrochloric acid kills most pathogens that make it past your mouth.

When pathogens do get through, white blood cells spring into action. They produce specific antibodies that lock onto foreign antigens, and phagocytes that literally engulf and destroy invaders. Vaccines work by introducing weakened pathogens so your body can create antibodies and remember how to fight the real disease later.

Developing new medicines is a lengthy process involving preclinical testing on cells and animals, followed by clinical trials on human volunteers. Scientists must find the perfect balance between efficacy (how well it works) and toxicity (harmful side effects). Testing uses placebos (fake drugs) in blind trials where neither patients nor doctors know who's getting the real treatment.

Key insight: Antibiotic resistance is becoming a huge problem because bacteria evolve quickly - that's why you must always finish your prescribed course of antibiotics, even if you feel better.
