Phagocytosis and Cellular Immunity
Ever wondered how your body fights off infections before you even feel ill? Phagocytosis is your first line of defence, carried out by macrophages (a type of white blood cell) that literally eat harmful invaders.
The process is surprisingly straightforward. When pathogens release chemicals, phagocytes detect these signals and move towards the threat. They attach to the pathogen using special receptors, then change shape to engulf it completely, forming a phagosome vesicle inside the cell.
Lysosomes then fuse with the phagosome and release lysozyme enzyme, which breaks down the pathogen completely. The useful bits get absorbed whilst the rest gets disposed of - it's like having microscopic bouncers that also clean up after themselves.
T cells provide the next level of defence through cell-mediated immunity. These cells mature in your thymus and only respond to antigen-presenting cells (APCs). When helper T cells encounter an APC, they activate and clone themselves, differentiating into various specialist cells including memory cells and cytotoxic T cells that destroy infected cells using perforin proteins.

B Cells and Antibody Production
B cells are your body's antibody factories, and they're incredibly diverse - you've got roughly 10 million different types, each designed to recognise specific antigens. When the right antigen meets its matching B cell, the real magic begins.
B cell activation happens when an antigen binds to the complementary antibody on the B cell's surface. The B cell processes the antigen and presents it on its membrane, then gets activated by helper T cells to undergo clonal expansion. This creates two crucial cell types: plasma cells that pump out antibodies quickly, and memory cells that stick around for decades.
This is why you get stronger, faster secondary immune responses when re-exposed to the same pathogen - your memory cells remember the threat and respond rapidly. However, antigen variability means pathogens can mutate and change shape, potentially escaping your existing immunity.
Vaccinations exploit this memory system by introducing weakened pathogens to create active immunity without making you ill. Monoclonal antibodies take this further, providing targeted treatments for conditions like cancer by delivering drugs directly to specific cell types.
