Hormones in Human Reproduction
Your body's transition into adulthood is controlled by reproductive hormones that kick-start puberty and develop your secondary sex characteristics. Think of these as your body's internal directors, orchestrating all the changes you experience during your teenage years.
In females, oestrogen takes centre stage as the main reproductive hormone, produced in the ovaries. Once puberty begins, eggs start maturing, and approximately every 28 days, one gets released during ovulation - this is your body preparing for potential pregnancy.
For males, testosterone runs the show by stimulating sperm production. This hormone doesn't just affect reproduction - it's also responsible for the physical changes like voice deepening and muscle development during puberty.
The menstrual cycle involves four key hormones working together: FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) helps eggs mature, LH (luteinising hormone) triggers egg release, whilst oestrogen and progesterone maintain the uterus lining. Understanding how these hormones interact is crucial for grasping human reproduction.
