Chromosomes are like massive folders containing thousands of genes bundled together. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes tucked away in the nucleus of almost every cell - that's 46 chromosomes in total!

Understanding Alleles and How They Work

Since you inherit genes from both parents, you actually have two copies of each gene (two alleles). Your genotype refers to which specific alleles you have, whilst your phenotype is what you actually look like.
Dominant alleles (shown with capital letters like A) are the bossy ones - they'll show up in your appearance even if you only have one copy. Recessive alleles (lowercase letters like a) are more shy and only appear when you have two copies.
When both your alleles are the same (AA or aa), you're homozygous. When they're different (Aa), you're heterozygous - and the dominant one will show up in your appearance.

From Genes to Proteins
Here's where the magic happens - your genes don't directly create characteristics, they make proteins that do the actual work. It's like genes being the architects and proteins being the builders.
First, DNA gets copied into mRNA (messenger RNA) through a process called transcription. The mRNA then travels to structures called ribosomes where the real action begins.
At the ribosome, every three bases of mRNA (called a codon) codes for a specific amino acid during translation. tRNA molecules act like delivery vans, bringing amino acids to the ribosome in exactly the right order.
These amino acids link together to form polypeptides (protein chains), and these proteins ultimately create your characteristics. Different alleles mean different proteins, which means different traits!
