Understanding Diabetes
Ever wondered why some people need to inject insulin or carefully monitor what they eat? Diabetes is a disorder where your body's blood regulation system goes wrong, resulting in poor blood sugar control that can make daily life quite challenging.
There are two main types you need to know about. Type 1 diabetes usually shows up when people are young and happens because their pancreas simply can't make enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes typically develops later in life when cells stop responding properly to the insulin that's being produced.
Both types cause similar symptoms that are quite noticeable. When blood sugar levels get too high, your body tries to get rid of the excess glucose through urine. Since glucose is soluble, water follows it out of your body due to osmosis - this means you'll be producing large volumes of urine and feeling constantly thirsty.
Quick Tip: Remember the connection between high glucose, osmosis, and excessive urination - this often comes up in exam questions about diabetes symptoms!
The key difference lies in how each type is managed. Type 1 requires insulin injections because the body simply can't produce it, while Type 2 can often be controlled through lifestyle changes like exercise and diet, though medication might also be needed.
