Understanding Ecosystems and Communities
Think of an ecosystem as nature's neighbourhood - it's where all the living creatures (like animals, plants, bacteria, and fungi) hang out together and interact with non-living things like soil, water, and climate. These living organisms form what we call a community, and they're all interdependent, meaning they rely on each other to survive.
Abiotic factors are the non-living bits of the environment (temperature, rainfall, soil type), whilst biotic factors are all the living things around. Understanding this difference helps you see how both living and non-living elements shape where organisms can thrive.
Adaptations are the special features that help organisms survive in their specific environments. There are three main types: behavioural (like birds migrating south for winter), structural (like a polar bear's thick fur), and functional (like a plant's ability to photosynthesise).
Quick Tip: Remember MRS GREN to recall the seven life processes - Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, and Nutrition!
Food chains show the flow of energy through ecosystems, starting with producers (plants), then moving through primary consumers (herbivores), secondary consumers (carnivores), and tertiary consumers (top predators). Don't forget about decomposers and scavengers - they're nature's recycling team, breaking down dead matter and returning nutrients to the ecosystem.
