Plant Cell Organisation and Leaf Structure
Your plant biology knowledge starts with understanding how different tissues work as a team. Epidermal tissue acts like the plant's protective skin, covering the entire plant surface. Meanwhile, inside the leaves, two key tissues handle photosynthesis differently.
Palisade mesophyll tissue is where most photosynthesis happens - think of it as the plant's main food factory. Just below it, spongy mesophyll tissue contains large air spaces that allow gases to move in and out easily, making gas exchange super efficient.
The plant's transport system relies on xylem and phloem tissues, which form networks called vascular bundles throughout the plant. Meristem tissue deserves special attention because it's found in growing tips and can transform into any type of plant cell, allowing plants to grow continuously.
Quick Tip: Remember that the upper epidermis is transparent - this isn't by accident! It allows light to reach the palisade layer where photosynthesis happens most efficiently.
Plant Transport Systems and Transpiration
Understanding how plants move water and food around is simpler than you might think. Xylem tubes are basically plant plumbing - they're made of dead cells joined end-to-end with no walls between them, strengthened by a material called lignin. They carry water and minerals from roots upward through the plant.
Phloem tubes work differently and transport food made during photosynthesis. Unlike xylem, phloem is made of living cells with small pores that allow sugary cell sap to flow in both directions through a process called translocation.
Transpiration is simply water loss through leaves, mainly caused by evaporation. This creates a water shortage in leaves, which pulls more water up through the xylem - creating the transpiration stream. Four main factors speed up transpiration: brighter light, warmer temperatures, stronger winds, and drier air.
Guard cells are the clever controllers that open and close stomata (tiny pores). They open stomata for gas exchange during photosynthesis but close them when water is scarce, helping plants balance their need for carbon dioxide with water conservation.
Exam Focus: Remember that transpiration rate increases with light, temperature, wind, and low humidity - this relationship often appears in exam questions!
