Types of Microscopes and Basic Setup

Think of light microscopes as powerful magnifying glasses that use light and lenses to make specimens bigger. They're brilliant for spotting cells and larger structures inside them, like the nucleus. These are the ones you'll most likely use in your school lab.

Electron microscopes are the superstars of the microscopy world. Instead of light, they fire electrons at specimens to create incredibly detailed images. They can reveal tiny structures like ribosomes and plasmids that light microscopes simply can't show you.

The magnification formula is dead simple: Magnification = Image Size ÷ Actual Size. Remember this triangle trick - cover the value you want to find, and the remaining two show you what to do (multiply or divide).

Quick Tip: When preparing slides, always start with a drop of water in the centre and add iodine solution to make cellular structures stand out with colour!

Using Microscopes and Recording Results

Start every microscopy session with the lowest magnification - this gives you the best chance of finding your specimen without getting lost. Clip your slide onto the stage, then use the coarse adjustment knob to bring the stage up close (but not touching!) to the objective lens.

Looking through the eyepiece, slowly move the stage down with the coarse knob until you get a rough image. Then switch to the fine adjustment knob for crystal-clear focus. This step-by-step approach prevents you from crashing the lens into your slide.

When drawing your observations, use a sharp pencil with clear, unbroken lines. Never colour or shade your drawings - scientists want accuracy, not artwork! Always include the magnification you used and keep structures in proportion.

Unit Conversion Made Easy: To convert millimetres to micrometres, divide by 1000. To go from micrometres to nanometres, divide by 1000 again. It's just shifting decimal places!
