Ever wondered how scientists can see individual cells? Microscopy is the key skill that lets you explore the microscopic world. The most important concept you'll need to master is magnification, which uses the equation: magnification = image size ÷ actual size.
Setting up your first slide is straightforward but requires precision. Start by placing a drop of water on a clean slide, then carefully separate onion layers using forceps to peel away the thin epidermal tissue. Add a few drops of iodine stain solution to highlight the cell structures - this makes everything much clearer to observe.
The trickiest part is placing the cover slip without creating air bubbles. Stand it upright on one side of your sample, then slowly tilt and lower it down. This technique takes practice but prevents those annoying bubbles that ruin your view!
When using the light microscope, always start with the lowest power objective lens. Use the coarse adjustment knob first to roughly focus by changing the stage height, then switch to the fine adjustment knob for crystal-clear resolution.
Top Tip: Always start focusing on low power - it's much easier to find your specimen this way, then zoom in for detail!
Your scientific drawings need to be spot-on for exams. Use pencil only, draw unbroken lines without any colouring or shading, and keep all subcellular structures in proper proportion. Don't forget to include a title, magnification value, and clear labels for key features.
