Digestive Enzymes: The Molecular Scissors
Think of digestive enzymes as tiny molecular scissors that chop up your food into pieces small enough to enter your bloodstream. Without them, that pasta you had for lunch would stay as massive starch molecules that your body couldn't absorb.
Carbohydrase enzymes (like amylase) break down carbohydrates into simple sugars. Amylase specifically turns starch into maltose, and it's produced in your salivary glands, pancreas, and small intestine. This is why bread starts tasting slightly sweet if you chew it long enough!
Protease enzymes slice proteins into amino acids. The most famous protease is pepsin, which works in your stomach's acidic environment. Your pancreas and small intestine also produce proteases to finish the job.
Lipase enzymes tackle fats, breaking them down into glycerol and fatty acids. These are produced by your pancreas and released into the small intestine where fat digestion mainly happens.
Quick Tip: Remember the pattern - most enzymes are produced in multiple locations (salivary glands, pancreas, small intestine) to ensure thorough digestion throughout your digestive tract.
Your Digestive System: A Complete Tour
Your digestive system is basically a 9-metre-long assembly line where each organ has a specific job. Starting from your mouth, salivary glands pump out amylase to begin breaking down starches before you even swallow.
Your stomach is like a muscular washing machine, pummelling food whilst producing pepsin and hydrochloric acid. The acid kills bacteria and creates the perfect acidic environment for pepsin to work. However, this creates a problem - the small intestine's enzymes can't work in such acidic conditions.
Enter bile, produced by your liver and stored in your gall bladder. Bile does two crucial jobs: it neutralises the stomach acid (making conditions alkaline) and emulsifies fats into tiny droplets. This gives lipase enzymes a much bigger surface area to work on.
Your small intestine is where the magic really happens. The pancreas delivers a cocktail of protease, amylase, and lipase enzymes, whilst the small intestine produces its own enzymes too. Most importantly, this is where all the digested nutrients get absorbed into your bloodstream.
Exam Focus: Remember that bile doesn't contain enzymes - it's not a digestive enzyme itself, but it helps enzymes work more effectively by emulsifying fats and neutralising acid.
