Cell Division: The Basics
Ever wondered how you've grown from a tiny baby to your current size? It's all down to cell division - your body's amazing ability to create new cells when needed.
Your body uses cell division for three main reasons: growth (making you bigger), repair (fixing damaged tissue like cuts), and reproduction (creating new organisms). Think of it like your body's own building and maintenance crew that never stops working.
Chromosomes are the key players here - they're DNA structures found in your cell's nucleus that carry all your genetic information. You've got 46 chromosomes (23 pairs) in most of your cells, with one set from each parent.
Quick Fact: Your DNA contains all the instructions needed to build and run your entire body - pretty incredible for something you can't even see!
The cell cycle is the process cells go through to divide and create two identical copies. Before any division happens, the cell must copy all its DNA and other important structures during interphase - basically preparing for the big split.
