How Your Kidneys Filter Blood: The Nephron Process
Ever wondered how your kidneys know what to keep and what to bin? The nephron is your kidney's microscopic workhorse that filters blood to remove waste whilst selectively grabbing back the useful bits.
Urine composition tells us exactly what your body doesn't want: water, dissolved salts, urea, and excess hormones or vitamins. What you won't find in healthy urine are proteins, blood cells, or glucose - proteins and blood cells are simply too massive to squeeze through the filter, whilst glucose gets completely reabsorbed because your body treasures every molecule.
The process happens in six brilliant stages. Ultrafiltration kicks things off when high blood pressure forces water and small molecules out of the glomerulus capillaries into Bowman's capsule. Then comes selective reabsorption in the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT), where your body reclaims vital nutrients, ions, and water.
Quick Fact: All glucose gets reabsorbed in the PCT - that's why finding glucose in urine usually signals diabetes!
The loop of Henle creates a sodium gradient that helps water return to your bloodstream, whilst the distal tubule and collecting duct fine-tune the final product. By the time liquid reaches your ureter, it's properly concentrated urine ready for disposal.
