Testing for Proteins with Biuret Solution

Want to know if that piece of chicken or slice of cheese is actually packed with protein? The Biuret test is your go-to method, and it's dead simple to do.

Start by preparing your food sample and measuring 2cm³ into a test tube. Then add exactly 2cm³ of Biuret solution and give it a gentle shake to mix everything together.

Here's the magic bit: if protein is present, the solution changes from blue to purple. No protein? It stays blue. This colour change happens because the Biuret reagent reacts specifically with protein molecules.

Quick Tip: Meat, eggs, and dairy products like cheese are brilliant foods to test because they're naturally high in protein!

Testing for Starch with Iodine Solution

If you've ever wondered whether foods like pasta, rice, or potatoes actually contain starch, the iodine test will give you a clear answer in seconds.

Take 5cm³ of your prepared food sample and pop it in a test tube. Add just a few drops of iodine solution and shake gently to mix the contents together.

The colour change is pretty dramatic: if starch is present, the solution shifts from browny-orange to blue-black or pure black. No starch means no colour change - simple as that.

Remember This: Starchy foods like bread, potatoes, and rice will always give you that distinctive blue-black colour!

Testing for Sugars with Benedict's Solution

The Benedict's test helps you detect reducing sugars in food, but this one needs a bit more kit than the others. Don't worry though - it's still straightforward once you get the hang of it.

First, prepare 5cm³ of your food sample in a test tube. Set up a water bath at exactly 75°C whilst you add about 10 drops of Benedict's solution using a pipette.

Pop your test tube into the water bath using a test tube holder (always point it away from you for safety) and leave it for 5 minutes. If reducing sugars are present, you'll see the solution change from blue to green, yellow, or brick red depending on how much sugar is there.

Safety First: Always use a test tube holder and point the tube away from you when heating - hot liquids can splash unexpectedly!
