Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cells Explained

Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic Cells
Think of prokaryotic cells as the simple, no-frills version of life. These are the cells that make up bacteria, and they're basically single-celled organisms doing everything they need to survive in one tiny package.
Eukaryotic cells are the complex, organised type that you'll find in animals, plants, and fungi. These cells have got their act together with specialised compartments and structures that each have specific jobs.
The main difference? Prokaryotic cells have their DNA floating freely in the cytoplasm like loose papers scattered on a desk. Eukaryotic cells keep their DNA neatly organised in a nucleus, like important documents filed away in a cabinet.
Quick Tip: Remember "pro" means "before" - prokaryotic cells evolved before the more complex eukaryotic cells!
Size matters too - prokaryotic cells are absolutely tiny whilst eukaryotic cells are much larger . Both contain cytoplasm and ribosomes, but eukaryotic cells also have mitochondria and sometimes chloroplasts.
There's also a third group called archaea - these are prokaryotic like bacteria but genetically quite different. They're basically the weird cousins of the cell world!
