Cell Biology Basics
All organisms are made up of cells, which are incredibly tiny - most are only 0.01-0.10mm in size. That's why you'll always need a microscope to see them properly in your science lessons.
Most living things are multicellular, meaning they're built from millions or billions of cells working together. These cells often become specialised to do specific jobs, like nerve cells carrying messages or muscle cells helping you move.
There are two main types of cells you need to know about: eukaryotic cells (plant and animal cells) and prokaryotic cells (bacterial cells). The key difference? Eukaryotic cells keep their genetic material locked away in a nucleus, whilst prokaryotic cells have their DNA floating freely in the cytoplasm.
Quick Tip: Remember that ALL cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm, and genetic material - but where that genetic material lives is what makes them different!
Eukaryotic cells are much larger and divide through a process called mitosis, which creates two identical daughter cells. Prokaryotic cells are much smaller and reproduce through binary fission, where the parent cell simply splits in two.
