Cell Types: The Big Picture

Think of cells like different types of houses - some are simple flats, others are massive mansions with separate rooms. Eukaryotic cells are like the fancy houses because they have a nucleus, which acts as the control centre storing all the cell's DNA.

Prokaryotic cells are much simpler - they're like studio flats where everything happens in one space. These cells don't have a nucleus, so their DNA just floats around freely inside the cell.

You'll find eukaryotic cells in plant cells and animal cells (including you!), whilst bacteria are the classic example of prokaryotic cells. Despite their differences, both cell types share some essential features.

Key Point: Both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells have cytoplasm (the jelly-like substance inside) and a cell membrane (the protective outer layer) - these are the basic building blocks that all living cells need to survive.
