Understanding Enzymes and How They Work
Enzymes are globular proteins that act as biological catalysts, meaning they speed up reactions without being consumed. They're incredibly efficient, with some catalysing thousands of reactions per second thanks to their high turnover rate.
What makes enzymes so special is their unique 3D shape and active site - a perfectly shaped region where substrates (the molecules they work on) can bind. Scientists originally explained this with the Lock and Key model, where the enzyme (lock) and substrate (key) fit together perfectly.
However, the more accurate Induced Fit model shows that enzymes are actually flexible, like a glove adjusting to fit your hand. When a substrate approaches, the active site changes shape slightly to accommodate it, forming an enzyme-substrate complex.
Quick Tip: Remember that enzymes are reusable - once they've catalysed a reaction, they're free to do it again immediately. This is why your body only needs relatively small amounts of each enzyme to keep your metabolism running smoothly.
