What Are Enzymes and How Do They Work?
Enzymes are biological catalysts - fancy words for molecules that make reactions happen faster without being changed themselves. They're folded into complex 3D shapes with a special spot called the active site where other molecules can fit perfectly.
The lock and key theory explains how enzymes work: the active site (lock) has a specific shape that only fits certain substrate molecules (key). This makes enzymes incredibly picky - most can only catalyse one type of reaction, which is why they're so efficient at their jobs.
Here's the process: first, the substrate crashes into and attaches to the active site. Then the enzyme breaks down the substance, and finally the products are released whilst the enzyme stays unchanged and ready to work again. It's like a recycling machine that never breaks down!
Quick Tip: Remember that enzymes can be reused over and over - they're not consumed in the reaction, making them super efficient biological tools.
Denaturation happens when enzymes face extreme temperatures or pH levels. Their active site changes shape, meaning the substrate no longer fits - like trying to use a bent key in a lock. Once this happens, the enzyme stops working entirely.
