Once inside, they head to the nucleus and directly influence which genes get switched on. Sex hormones like testosterone, oestrogen, and progesterone work this way, which explains why they have such powerful, long-lasting effects on your body.
Non-steroid hormones are water-loving (hydrophilic) and can't cross cell membranes, so they have to work from outside the cell. They bind to receptors on the cell surface and trigger a cascade of reactions using second messengers. Adrenaline works this way - it's like pressing a panic button that sets off a whole chain reaction inside your cells.
Remember: Steroid hormones work slowly but powerfully by changing gene expression, whilst non-steroid hormones work faster through second messenger systems.
