Understanding Ecosystems

Think of an ecosystem as nature's neighbourhood where everything has a job to do. It's made up of all the living things (like plants, animals, and tiny microbes) plus all the non-living bits (air, water, soil, and sunlight) in a particular area.

The brilliant thing about ecosystems is how everything connects. Solar radiation from the sun powers the whole system, giving plants energy to grow. These plants then become food for animals, creating a web of relationships that keeps everything balanced.

Ecosystems work through two main processes: nutrient cycles (where chemicals like nitrogen get recycled between soil, plants, and animals) and energy flows (where energy moves from the sun through plants to animals). It's like a giant recycling system that never stops!

Quick Example: In a pond ecosystem, water weeds use sunlight to grow, tadpoles munch on the weeds, frogs eat the tadpoles, and when things die, they break down to feed the soil - it's all connected!
