Ever wondered what makes you unique? DNA is the answer - it's a special molecule found in almost all your cells, made up of a sequence of just 4 bases. The sequence is completely different for every living thing on Earth, which is why you're one of a kind!
DNA doesn't just float around randomly in your cells. It coils up to form chromosomes that are safely stored in the nucleus of plant, animal, and fungal cells. Bacteria are a bit different - they have one single circular chromosome plus smaller DNA rings called plasmids.
The famous double helix structure of DNA looks like a twisted ladder. It's called "double" because DNA consists of 2 strands that are linked together by their bases. These bases follow a strict pairing rule: A always pairs with T, and C always pairs with G (Adenine-Thymine, Cytosine-Guanine).
Quick Tip: Remember the base pairing with "Apple Tree" and "Car Garage" - this complementary pairing is essential for DNA replication and protein production!
Here's where it gets exciting - proteins are made from amino acids at structures called ribosomes in the cytoplasm. The sequence of amino acids determines the protein's shape, and this sequence is controlled by your DNA's base sequence. This happens through a two-stage process involving messenger RNA (mRNA): first, a complementary copy of a gene is made in the nucleus, then this mRNA travels to ribosomes to determine amino acid order.
A gene is simply a section of DNA that codes for one protein. When genes go wrong, proteins might be the wrong shape and not work properly, or they might not be made at all - which explains many genetic conditions.
