Understanding Diabetes
Ever wondered why some people need to check their blood sugar levels regularly? Diabetes occurs when your blood glucose (blood sugar) becomes too high because your body can't manage it properly.
Think of insulin as a key that unlocks your cells to let glucose in for energy. Your pancreas makes this hormone, but when you have diabetes, either your pancreas doesn't make enough insulin or your body can't use it effectively. Without this process working correctly, glucose builds up in your bloodstream instead of powering your cells.
Type 1 diabetes means your pancreas has basically stopped making insulin altogether. This type is often inherited from your family and requires insulin injections or medication to manage. Type 2 diabetes is different - your body makes insulin but can't use it properly, and it's often linked to lifestyle factors like diet and exercise.
Quick Tip: Remember diabetes with the "4 T's" - Toilet (frequent urination), Thirsty, Tired, and Thinner (unexpected weight loss). These are the most common early warning signs.
The symptoms are quite noticeable once you know what to look for. Frequent trips to the loo (especially at night), feeling constantly thirsty and tired, unexpected weight loss, and slower healing of cuts are all red flags. You might also experience blurred vision, increased hunger, or genital itching.
