Control of Blood Glucose Concentration

Your pancreas is basically a multitasking powerhouse that works as both an endocrine and exocrine gland. The endocrine bit involves special islet cells that pump out two crucial hormones - insulin and glucagon - straight into your bloodstream. Meanwhile, the exocrine function handles digestion by producing enzymes that travel through the pancreatic duct to help break down your food.

When your blood glucose concentration gets too high (like after demolishing a pizza), your pancreas releases insulin into your blood. This hormone acts like a traffic controller, directing that excess glucose to your liver and muscles where it either gets used up through increased respiration or stored away as glycogen - think of it as your body's glucose savings account.

On the flip side, when your blood sugar drops too low (perhaps after a long workout), glucagon steps in to save the day. This hormone tells your liver to convert stored glycogen back into glucose and release it into your bloodstream, bringing your energy levels back up to normal.

Quick Tip: Remember that insulin = storage (high glucose → store as glycogen) while glucagon = release (low glucose → release stored glucose)
