Cell Transport Mechanisms
Your cell membranes aren't just barriers - they're sophisticated gatekeepers that control what enters and leaves cells. The fluid mosaic model describes how membranes work, with a phospholipid bilayer containing hydrophilic (water-loving) heads and hydrophobic (water-hating) tails, plus various proteins that act as channels and carriers.
Diffusion is the simplest transport method - molecules naturally move from areas of high concentration to low concentration until they're evenly spread out. Only small, non-polar, lipid-soluble substances can diffuse directly through membranes. The rate depends on factors like molecule size, temperature, distance, surface area, and concentration gradient.
When larger or charged molecules need to cross membranes, facilitated diffusion comes to the rescue. This uses protein channels (water-filled tunnels for specific ions) or carrier proteins (which change shape to transport molecules). No energy required - it still follows the concentration gradient.
Osmosis specifically deals with water movement across semi-permeable membranes, moving from high to low water potential (less negative to more negative). In animal cells, this can cause bursting (hypotonic), stability (isotonic), or shrivelling (hypertonic). Plant cells handle it better thanks to their cell walls - they become turgid, stay normal, or become plasmolysed.
Key Exam Tip: Remember that water potential of pure water = 0, and solutions have negative water potential values!
Sometimes cells need to move substances against the concentration gradient, which requires active transport using ATP energy. Protein pumps change shape when ATP binds, forcing molecules uphill. Cells can also engulf large particles through endocytosis or release materials via exocytosis - both requiring energy and explaining how cells handle bigger cargo.
