The Cell's Control Centre and Protein Factories
Your nucleus is basically the cell's headquarters, surrounded by a double membrane called the nuclear envelope. Think of the nuclear pores as security checkpoints that control what goes in and out. Inside, you'll find the nucleoplasm and chromosomes containing your DNA.
The nucleolus sits inside the nucleus like a smaller sphere, working as a ribosome factory. It produces rRNA and assembles ribosomes - pretty important since ribosomes make all your proteins!
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) comes in two flavours: rough and smooth. Both have folded membranes called cisternae, but rough ER is covered in ribosomes (hence "rough") and makes proteins. Smooth ER handles lipid and carbohydrate synthesis instead.
Quick Tip: Remember RER = Rough ER = Ribosomes = pRotein synthesis!
Your Golgi apparatus works like a post office, modifying proteins and adding carbohydrates to create glycoproteins. It packages everything into vesicles and ships them to their final destinations. Lysosomes are the cleanup crew - these enzyme-filled bags digest waste, break down dead cells, and recycle worn-out organelles.
Powerhouses, Protein Makers, and Structural Support
Mitochondria are your cellular power stations with their distinctive double membrane and folded inner membrane called cristae. The fluid centre (mitochondrial matrix) contains DNA and enzymes for aerobic respiration. More cristae means more surface area for ATP production - which explains why active cells like muscle cells are packed with mitochondria.
Ribosomes might be small, but they're mighty! These protein-making machines consist of two subunits made from protein and rRNA. Eukaryotic cells have larger 80s ribosomes, while prokaryotes use smaller 70s versions.
Plant cells get extra features: vacuoles surrounded by a tonoplast membrane store water and maintain cell pressure (making plants stand upright). Chloroplasts contain thylakoids packed with pigments for photosynthesis, plus a fluid stroma with photosynthetic enzymes.
Remember: Chloroplasts = Chlorophyll = Photosynthesis = Plant power!
The cell wall (in plants and fungi) provides structural strength, while the plasma membrane controls molecular traffic. The plasma membrane's phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins acts like a selective bouncer, deciding what enters and exits your cells.
