Light Microscopes and Cell Structure
Ever wondered how we can see something as tiny as a cell? Light microscopes use light and lenses to magnify specimens up to about 2000 times, letting you see individual cells and large organelles with a resolution of 0.2 micrometres. They're perfect for observing living cells in action.
Setting up a microscope slide is straightforward: add a water drop to a clean slide, place your specimen with tweezers, add stain if needed (like iodine), and carefully place a cover slip to avoid air bubbles. When using the microscope, always start with the lowest magnification and work your way up.
Eukaryotic cells (like plant and animal cells) have their DNA safely packaged in a nucleus, whilst prokaryotic cells (bacteria) have their DNA floating freely in the cytoplasm. Plant cells have extra features like a cell wall made of cellulose, chloroplasts for photosynthesis, and a large permanent vacuole containing cell sap.
Quick Tip: Remember the magnification formula: Magnification = Image size ÷ Real size. This calculation comes up regularly in exams!
Specialised Cells and Transport
Cells don't stay generic forever - they differentiate to become specialists at particular jobs. Sperm cells have long tails and loads of mitochondria for swimming to the egg, whilst nerve cells have branching dendrites and long axons to carry electrical signals around your body.
Diffusion happens when particles spread from high to low concentration - think of perfume spreading across a room. Osmosis is specifically water moving through a partially permeable membrane, whilst active transport moves substances against the concentration gradient using energy from respiration.
Gas exchange surfaces like alveoli in lungs and gills in fish are perfectly designed with large surface areas, thin walls, and good blood supply. This maximises the efficiency of getting oxygen in and carbon dioxide out.

Mitosis is how your body grows and repairs itself, creating two identical daughter cells from one parent cell. The process involves DNA replication, chromosome alignment, and careful splitting to ensure each new cell gets exactly the same genetic information.
Stem cells are the ultimate multi-talented cells - they can differentiate into many different cell types. They're found in bone marrow and early embryos, making them incredibly valuable for treating conditions like leukaemia and potentially diabetes or paralysis in the future.
Bacteria reproduce through binary fission, simply splitting in two after copying their circular DNA. The number of bacteria doubles with each division: 1 becomes 2, then 4, then 8, and so on - which is why infections can spread so rapidly!
