The Boscastle Flood Disaster

Picture this: you're in a lovely Cornish village when suddenly 89mm of rain dumps on you in just one hour. That's exactly what happened to Boscastle in August 2004, turning this peaceful coastal settlement into a raging torrent that swept cars and buildings straight into the sea.

The flooding wasn't just bad luck - several factors came together to create the perfect storm. The ground was already saturated from earlier rainfall, so it couldn't soak up any more water. Boscastle sits in a steep-sided valley that acted like a massive funnel, directing all that water straight into the village centre.

To make matters worse, the river channels running through Boscastle were too narrow to cope with the massive volume of water. It's like trying to drain a swimming pool through a drinking straw - the water had nowhere to go except over the banks and into people's homes and businesses.

Quick Fact: The 2004 Boscastle flood put lives at risk and caused millions of pounds worth of damage, but amazingly, no one died thanks to dramatic helicopter rescues.

Now Boscastle has invested £4.5 million in flood defences to make sure this doesn't happen again. They've widened and deepened the river channel, raised the car park height, and installed better drainage systems throughout the valley.
