States of Matter and Particle Behaviour
The three states of matter - solids, liquids, and gases - all depend on how particles move and arrange themselves. In solids, particles vibrate in fixed positions with low kinetic energy, creating regular patterns that give solids their fixed shape.
Liquids have randomly arranged particles that can move around each other with higher kinetic energy. This allows liquids to flow and take the shape of their container, but they still can't be compressed because particles remain close together.
Gases have particles with the highest kinetic energy, moving freely and randomly. The particle model helps us visualise these arrangements, but remember it has limitations - it doesn't show chemical bonds, and real particles aren't solid spheres like the diagrams suggest.
Quick Tip: Remember the state symbols for equations: solid, liquid, gas, and (aq) aqueous (dissolved in water).

Chemical Bonding Types
Metallic bonding creates that characteristic "metallic" behaviour you know well. Metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions surrounded by a "sea" of delocalised electrons. This electron sea explains why metals conduct electricity and can be shaped - though pure metals are often too soft, so we make alloys by mixing different-sized atoms to strengthen them.
Ionic bonding happens when metals meet non-metals. The metal loses electrons whilst the non-metal gains them, creating oppositely charged ions that attract each other through electrostatic forces. These form giant ionic lattices with high melting points.
Covalent bonding involves atoms sharing electrons to get full outer shells. This typically occurs between non-metals and creates strong bonds within molecules, though the forces between separate molecules are much weaker.
Remember: You'll need to draw dot and cross diagrams for simple molecules like water, methane, and hydrogen chloride - practice makes perfect!
