Biomolecules: The Importance of Water in Biology

Water: The Molecule of Life
Water molecules have an unequal sharing of electrons, creating a polar molecule with slightly negative oxygen and slightly positive hydrogen atoms. This polarity allows water molecules to form hydrogen bonds with each other—weak attractions that are constantly breaking and reforming. While individually weak, the sheer number of these bonds gives water its life-supporting properties.
Water's relatively high boiling point means it stays liquid at room temperature, as breaking all those hydrogen bonds requires significant energy. Interestingly, when water freezes, it forms an open tetrahedral structure that takes up more space than its liquid form, making ice less dense so it floats. This floating ice insulates aquatic environments below, protecting life during cold periods.
The polarity of water molecules creates both cohesion (attraction to other water molecules) and adhesion (attraction to other surfaces). These properties enable crucial functions like capillary action, where water can move upward against gravity through narrow spaces—essential for plant transport systems and many laboratory techniques.
Did you know? Water's surface tension is strong enough that some insects can literally walk on water without breaking through!
Water serves multiple critical roles in supporting life: it's an excellent solvent for biological reactions, provides a stable habitat for countless organisms, functions as an efficient transport medium, and acts as a temperature buffer. Its ability to absorb significant heat energy when evaporating makes it an effective cooling system for organisms, helping maintain the stable internal environments that life processes require.

Students love us — and so will you.
The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
