Your heart is basically a powerful pump with four chambers that keeps you alive 24/7. The top chambers are called atria, and the bottom ones are ventricles - they're separated by valves that act like one-way doors.
The vena cava brings deoxygenated blood (blood that's used up its oxygen) back from your body into the right side of your heart. This blood then gets pumped to your lungs through the pulmonary artery to pick up fresh oxygen.
Once the blood is oxygenated in your lungs, it returns to your heart via the pulmonary vein. Your heart then pumps this oxygen-rich blood out through the aorta to supply your entire body.
Quick tip Remember that arteries carry blood away from the heart, whilst veins bring blood back to the heart!
Scientists use Canadian pondweed to measure how light intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis - and it's actually quite clever! The setup involves placing the pondweed in water under a light source and measuring the oxygen bubbles it produces.
The faster the pondweed produces oxygen bubbles, the faster it's photosynthesising. This direct relationship makes it easy to see how different factors like light intensity affect the process.
You can change the distance between the light source and the plant to alter light intensity, then count the bubbles produced in a set time. This gives you real data about how plants respond to different light conditions.
Lab tip Make sure to keep water temperature constant during the experiment, as this can also affect the rate of photosynthesis!
