Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes
Ever wondered what makes your cells different from the bacteria that cause infections? The answer lies in how they organise their genetic material (DNA). This difference is so important that it divides all life on Earth into two major groups.
Eukaryotic cells are the sophisticated ones - they keep their DNA safely locked away inside a nucleus. Think of the nucleus as a control room with walls around it. Animal cells and plant cells are both eukaryotes, which means your cells have this neat, organised structure.
Prokaryotic cells take a much simpler approach - their DNA just floats freely in the cytoplasm without any protective walls around it. Bacterial cells are prokaryotes, and they're actually much smaller than your cells because they don't need space for a nucleus.
Quick Tip: Remember it this way - "pro" means "before" and "eu" means "true". Prokaryotes came before true nuclei evolved!
Here's what makes prokaryotes special: they often have plasmids, which are small loops of extra DNA floating around. They also have a cell wall and cell membrane like eukaryotes, but everything inside is much more basic and compact.
