# 5. HOME OSTASIS

Homeostasis is the regulation of the internal conditions of a
cell or organism to maintain oprimum conditions in response

Homeostasis and Body Systems

Your body is constantly monitoring and adjusting itself through homeostasis - the process that keeps everything running smoothly. Think of it like your body's own internal thermostat that never switches off.

The nervous system acts like your body's electrical wiring, sending messages at lightning speed. When a receptor detects a change (like touching something hot), it sends signals through sensory neurones to your brain, which then tells motor neurones to make your muscles react. Synapses are the tiny gaps between nerve cells where chemical messages jump across.

Your brain has different areas for different jobs. The cerebral cortex handles thinking, memory, and language, whilst the medulla controls vital functions like breathing and heartbeat. The cerebellum keeps you balanced and coordinated.

Quick Tip: Remember that reflexes happen automatically - your brain doesn't have to think about pulling your hand away from something hot!

Vision and Temperature Control

Your eyes are incredible biological cameras that automatically adjust to different conditions. The iris controls how much light enters through the pupil, whilst the lens changes shape to focus on objects at different distances. Long-sightedness happens when light focuses behind the retina, making close objects blurry.

Body temperature regulation is one of your body's most important jobs. When you're too hot, you sweat and blood vessels near your skin widen (vasodilation) to release heat. When you're cold, your hair stands up for insulation, blood vessels narrow (vasoconstriction), and your muscles shiver to generate heat.

The thermoregulatory centre in your brain constantly monitors your blood temperature and triggers the right responses. It's like having a built-in climate control system that works without you even thinking about it!

# 5. HOME OSTASIS

Homeostasis is the regulation of the internal conditions of a
cell or organism to maintain oprimum conditions in response

Kidneys and Hormones

Your kidneys are brilliant biological filters that clean your blood 24/7. They remove urea (a toxic waste from protein breakdown) whilst keeping useful stuff like glucose and the right amount of water and ions. When your body has too much protein, your liver converts the excess into ammonia, then into safer urea.

Water regulation is crucial - when you're dehydrated, your body releases ADH hormone to help your kidneys save more water. Too much salt can mess up this delicate balance, which is why your kidneys carefully control ion levels.

The menstrual cycle runs on a complex hormone system. FSH from the pituitary gland helps eggs mature and triggers oestrogen production. LH causes ovulation around day 14, whilst progesterone maintains the uterus lining. When hormone levels drop, the cycle starts again.

Remember: Your kidneys process about 180 litres of blood daily - that's like filtering a whole bathtub!

Adrenaline gives you that instant energy boost during stressful situations by increasing blood flow to muscles and brain. Thyroxine acts like your body's metabolic controller, determining how fast your cells work.

Plant Hormones and Growth

Plants have their own hormone systems too! Gibberellin kickstarts seed germination and promotes stem growth, whilst ethene triggers fruit ripening - that's why bananas in a bag ripen faster together.

# 5. HOME OSTASIS

Homeostasis is the regulation of the internal conditions of a
cell or organism to maintain oprimum conditions in response

DNA, Inheritance and Evolution

DNA is like your body's instruction manual, containing the code for making proteins. These proteins become enzymes, hormones, or structural materials that build your body. Mutations can change this code through insertions, deletions, or substitutions of genetic material.

Inherited disorders follow predictable patterns. Cystic fibrosis is recessive (you need two copies to have it), causing sticky mucus problems. Polydactyly is dominant (one copy is enough), resulting in extra fingers or toes. Embryo screening can detect these conditions early.

Speciation happens when groups of organisms become so different they can't reproduce together anymore. Famous scientists like Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel, and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck all contributed to our understanding of evolution and inheritance.

Did You Know: You share about 99.9% of your DNA with every other human - it's that tiny 0.1% that makes you unique!

Cloning creates identical genetic copies. Plants can be cloned through tissue culture and cuttings, whilst animals use embryo transplants or adult cell cloning. Genetic engineering produces GM crops like golden rice and allows bacteria to make human insulin.

Fossils form when organisms are gradually replaced by minerals, preserved in amber, or leave impressions in clay. The three-domain classification system divides life into Archaea (extremophiles), Bacteria, and Eukaryota (organisms with nuclei).

# 5. HOME OSTASIS

Homeostasis is the regulation of the internal conditions of a
cell or organism to maintain oprimum conditions in response

Ecology and Environmental Interactions

Biotic factors (living things) and abiotic factors nonlivingconditionsnon-living conditions shape where organisms can survive. Competition for resources, predators, pathogens, temperature, light, and pH all influence population sizes.

Organisms develop amazing adaptations to survive. Structural adaptations change body shape or colour, behavioural adaptations involve migration or hunting patterns, and functional adaptations alter internal processes like metabolism.

Decomposers are nature's recyclers, breaking down dead material to release nutrients. Decay happens faster with higher temperature, more oxygen, adequate water, and more decomposer organisms present.

Cool Fact: Without decomposers, we'd be buried under millions of years of dead plants and animals!

Biogas generators use anaerobic decay to produce methane from organic waste. Batch generators work in cycles, whilst continuous generators produce gas constantly.

Biotechnology harnesses living organisms for useful purposes. Mycoprotein comes from Fusarium fungus grown on glucose syrup. Genetic engineering allows bacteria to produce human insulin by inserting human genes into bacterial plasmids using restriction enzymes and ligase enzymes.

The modified bacteria multiply in controlled fermentation tanks, producing life-saving insulin for diabetics. This shows how understanding biology can directly improve human health and wellbeing.
