Your body is constantly monitoring and adjusting itself through homeostasis - the process that keeps everything running smoothly. Think of it like your body's own internal thermostat that never switches off.

The nervous system acts like your body's electrical wiring, sending messages at lightning speed. When a receptor detects a change (like touching something hot), it sends signals through sensory neurones to your brain, which then tells motor neurones to make your muscles react. Synapses are the tiny gaps between nerve cells where chemical messages jump across.

Your brain has different areas for different jobs. The cerebral cortex handles thinking, memory, and language, whilst the medulla controls vital functions like breathing and heartbeat. The cerebellum keeps you balanced and coordinated.

Your eyes are incredible biological cameras that automatically adjust to different conditions. Body temperature regulation is one of your body's most important jobs. When you're too hot, you sweat and blood vessels near your skin widen (vasodilation) to release heat. When you're cold, your hair stands up for insulation, blood vessels narrow (vasoconstriction), and your muscles shiver to generate heat.

The thermoregulatory centre in your brain constantly monitors your blood temperature and triggers the right responses. It's like having a built-in climate control system that works without you even thinking about it!

Kidneys and Hormones

Your kidneys are brilliant biological filters that clean your blood 24/7. They remove urea (a toxic waste from protein breakdown) whilst keeping useful stuff like glucose and the right amount of water and ions. When your body has too much protein, your liver converts the excess into ammonia, then into safer urea.

Water regulation is crucial - when you're dehydrated, your body releases ADH hormone to help your kidneys save more water. Too much salt can mess up this delicate balance, which is why your kidneys carefully control ion levels.

DNA, Inheritance and Evolution

DNA is like your body's instruction manual, containing the code for making proteins. These proteins become enzymes, hormones, or structural materials that build your body. Mutations can change this code through insertions, deletions, or substitutions of genetic material.
