The Three Layers of Your Skin
Think of your skin like a three-storey building - each floor has different rooms serving specific purposes. The epidermis is your top floor and acts like your body's security system, creating a waterproof barrier that keeps harmful stuff out and moisture in. This outer layer is also responsible for your skin colour, making you uniquely you.
The dermis sits in the middle and is basically your skin's control centre. It's packed with blood vessels that deliver nutrients, nerves that help you feel everything from a gentle touch to pain, and hair follicles where your hair grows. You'll also find sweat glands here, which are like your body's built-in air conditioning system.
At the bottom lies the hypodermis, your skin's foundation layer. This deepest section is mainly made up of fat cells (called adipocytes) and connective tissue that acts like padding, protecting your muscles underneath whilst helping to insulate your body.
Quick Check: Remember the layers from outside to inside - Epidermis (waterproof barrier), Dermis (control centre), Hypodermis (padding and insulation)!
