Cell Structure Basics

All living organisms are made up of cells that can be classified as either eukaryotic multicelledmulti-celled or prokaryotic singlecelledsingle-celled. Eukaryotic cells, found in plants and animals, contain membrane-bound organelles including a nucleus. Plant cells have additional structures like cell walls, vacuoles, and chloroplasts that animal cells lack.

The plasma membrane is a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins that contains cell contents and maintains structural integrity. Inside eukaryotic cells, the cytoskeleton provides support through microfilaments and microtubules. This dynamic network maintains cell shape, enables movement, and helps position organelles.

Organelles serve specific functions: the nucleus houses DNA and controls the cell; mitochondria produce ATP; ribosomes synthesize proteins; and the endoplasmic reticulum (rough and smooth) processes proteins and lipids. The Golgi apparatus modifies and packages molecules, while lysosomes contain digestive enzymes that break down cellular waste.

💡 Remember that structure determines function! Each organelle's unique structure directly relates to its specific role in the cell.

Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic Cells

Prokaryotic cells (like bacteria) differ significantly from eukaryotic cells. They're about ten times smaller and lack membrane-bound organelles. Their DNA floats freely in the cytoplasm as a single, circular chromosome, often with additional plasmids (small rings of DNA).

Prokaryotes have unique structures including pili hairlikeprojectionshair-like projections, mesosomes (folded portions of the inner membrane), and a slime capsule that provides protection. Their cell walls contain murein, unlike plant cells (cellulose) or fungal cells (chitin).

Studying Cells

Scientists use different types of microscopes to study cells. Light microscopes use light beams and can magnify up to 1500x with a resolution of 0.2 micrometers. For more detailed views, electron microscopes use beams of electrons and can achieve magnifications up to 1,000,000x with much better resolution.

Cell structures can be highlighted through staining techniques. For example, acetic urchin binds to DNA staining chromosomes red, while iodine stains cellulose yellow and starch blue/black. These techniques allow scientists to better visualize and understand cellular structures and their functions.
