Animal Cell Structure

Think of an animal cell like a bustling factory where different parts have specific jobs to keep everything running smoothly. Each component, called an organelle, plays a crucial role in keeping the cell alive and functioning.

The nucleus acts as the control centre of the cell, containing your DNA - the genetic instructions that determine everything about you. It's like the boss of the factory, telling all the other parts what to do and when to do it.

The cytoplasm is the gel-like substance that fills the cell, providing a watery environment where chemical reactions can happen. This is where anaerobic respiration occurs, helping to release energy without oxygen.

Ribosomes are tiny protein-making machines scattered throughout the cytoplasm. They read the instructions from the nucleus and build the proteins your body needs to function properly.

Key Fact: The mitochondria are often called the "powerhouses of the cell" because they're where aerobic respiration happens - the process that releases most of your cellular energy using oxygen.

The cell membrane works like a selective bouncer at a club, controlling what substances can enter and leave the cell whilst keeping everything contained inside.
